Family 1 : Catherine Margerate STAPLETON

INDEX

[31] The following information comes from:
http://terisha4.tripod.com/keelergensite/id24.html

SIMON DERK, (later DERRICK), was born abt 1712 in Palatine-Lippe, Germany; d.abt 1787 Shenandoah County, Virginia. He married abt 1739, probably in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, CATHERINE MARGARET STAPLETON, b. abt 1722 Berks County, Pennsylvania; d. aft 1787 Shenandoah County,Virginia, daughter of ROBERT P. STAPLETON and either his first wife ANNA TURKIN or more probably his second wife CATHERINE REICHARD, a widow who's married name is unknown.

According to "The Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County Pennsylvania" which was compiled by Morton L. Montgomery in two volumes and published by J. H. Beers & Company of Chicago in 1909, Robert P. Stapleton was an Englishmen of noble blood who joined the Quaker faith and then was ostracized by his family and so immigrated to Berks Co PA and founded a plantation at Oley known as Stapleton Place. The entire article can be found on the Berks Co GenWeb page at : http://www.rootsweb.com/~paberks/montgomery/s23.html

Though the information contained in the book seems to have been gleaned from a direct descendant of the line, it should be considered hearsay until proven. There are other researchers who contend that Robert was German. It should be noted that the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive, in that there is much history of political interaction between the two countries, and nobility often married for political reasons. This needs to be further researched before drawing any conclusion. A German variant of the name is STEBELTON.

Simon immigrated to Philadelphia on the ship "St. Andrew" October 27, 1738. His will is in WILL BOOK A, PPG 310 thru 312, SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VIRGINIA and names wife Catharine; sons Jacob Derk and George Derk; sons of Jacob, named Simon and Tobias; daughter Mary Elizabeth "now living in Pennsylvaini and being blind"; eldest son John and his heirs.

An informative article on Simon can be found on Marieda Eden's webpage: http://members.aol.com/Mderoot2/SimonDerrick.html
