Jonathan Derrick b-1776 Shenandoah Co. VA and his wife Mary HAYNES came to Kanawha Co. before the 1820 census, with their first four children, ten more children were born to them after settling on the Creek named after him.

He was the only Derrick to come to this area, other members of his family went to TN,TX and westward after the death of their parents, John and Anna Maria "Mary" DUNKELBERGER Derrick, spelled "Derk" in earlier days.

Jonathan aquired 2,572 acres in the Poca District and all of it at that time was covered with timber, and also a vein of coal in the hills, seven feet thick. He cleared a road from his farm and made improvments on the land and in addition to his other enterprises, followed the trade of a Blacksmith. He made bells which were hung on the necks of the cows, to keep them from getting lost in the forest.

At the time of his death in 1846, he owned 3/5 of his original land, his son John 1/5 and his son-in-law George Boggess 1/5. He left a certain part of his land for the family cemetery, to always be consecrated for that purpose.

JOHANNES "JOHN" DERRICK,b. ABT 1740 Berks County, Pennsylvania,d. abt 1790 in Glen Wilton, Botetourt County,Virginia. He married abt 1759 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, ANNA MARIA "MARY" DUNKELBERGER, b. 1744 Berks County, Pennsylvania; d. 1793 Botetourt County,Virginia, daughter of CLEMENTS DUNKELBERGER and ANNA MARIA HAUER.

John Derrick's father-in-law, Clements Dunkelberger, was the son of Clement Dunkelberger, b. 1681 Germany, and Margaretha Gottschalk, b. 1682. The elder Clement Dunkelberger and his family arrived on the ship Mortonhouse from Deal, England on 23 Aug 1728 along with two of his brothers, Peter and Frederick. Listed as having originated in Wurttemberg Germany, Palatinate. His son "Clemens" was age 23 on the passenger list, so b. abt 1705. Clemens/Clements married Anna Maria Hauer in Berks Co PA abt 1738.

The Will of Clements Dunkelberger was written 12 Feb 1776, probated 08 Apr 1782 in Windsor Twshp, Berks Co PA.

Will Bk B, pg 38 -- Names son Clemens, who inherits 200 ac plantation in Windsor; son-in-law Andrew Wininger and wife Catharina; son-in-law John Derk and wife Mary "have had their share"; sons John, Frederick, and Christopher; son-in-law Michael Dirk [Derk] and wife Elisabeth; son Philip; daughters Sevela, Magdalena and Thorothea [Dorothea]; and wife Ann Mary [Anna Maria Hauer]. Extrs were friends George Hower and Jacob Raush, wits were John and Killian Dunkel.
